Overview

Erythropoietin is a glycoprotein hormone primarily produced by the kidneys that regulates red blood cell production (erythropoiesis) in response to hypoxia. Recombinant forms, such as epoetin alfa, are used therapeutically to treat anemia associated with chronic kidney disease, chemotherapy for non-myeloid malignancies, HIV therapy (zidovudine-induced anemia), and to reduce the need for allogeneic blood transfusions during certain surgeries. Mechanistically, erythropoietin binds to the erythropoietin receptor (EPO-R) on erythroid progenitor cells in bone marrow, activating JAK2/STAT5 signaling pathways that promote survival and differentiation of these cells into mature red blood cells[1][4][5]. The drug is administered via intravenous or subcutaneous injection.
