Overview

Ethambutol + rifabutin is a combination of two antimycobacterial drugs used primarily for the treatment of Mycobacterium avium complex (MAC) infections, particularly in patients with HIV/AIDS. This combination produces an additive inhibitory effect against most MAC strains, with synergistic effects observed in some cases. The combination reduces the minimal inhibitory concentrations for each drug and demonstrates synergistic bactericidal activity. Ethambutol works by inhibiting arabinosyltransferases in mycobacterial cells, preventing formation of cell wall components. Rifabutin is an ansamycin antibiotic that inhibits DNA-dependent RNA polymerase in susceptible bacteria.
