Overview

Vaccinia virus extract, also known as extract of rabbit skin inflamed by vaccinia virus (ERSI), is a complex biological mixture derived from the skin of rabbits inoculated with the vaccinia virus (Lister strain). It contains a variety of active components, including amino acids and nucleic acid-related compounds such as urocanic acid and hypoxanthine. Historically utilized for the treatment of chronic and neuropathic pain, the extract is being investigated for its neuroprotective and anti-inflammatory properties in the context of acute ischemic stroke (AIS). Its mechanism of action involves reducing ischemia-induced cerebral edema, decreasing infarct volume, and scavenging oxygen radicals. Additionally, it has been shown to increase superoxide dismutase (SOD) activity and preserve neuronal viability under hypoxic or hypoglycemic conditions.
