ferrous calcium citrate

Ferrous calcium citrate is an oral iron supplement used primarily for the treatment and prevention of iron deficiency anemia. It is a complex salt containing iron(II), calcium, and citrate ions, designed to enhance the solubility and bioavailability of iron throughout the gastrointestinal tract. Unlike traditional iron salts such as ferrous sulfate, ferrous calcium citrate maintains its solubility in the higher pH environment of the small intestine and is less affected by the presence of gastric acid inhibitors. Clinical studies have indicated that it is particularly well-absorbed in patients with malabsorptive conditions or inflammatory bowel diseases, such as Crohn's disease, and it is generally associated with a lower incidence of gastrointestinal side effects. The drug was developed and is widely marketed in Japan.
