Overview

A combination antifungal therapy consisting of fluconazole and flucytosine. Fluconazole is a triazole antifungal that inhibits fungal cytochrome P450 enzymes, disrupting ergosterol synthesis in fungal cell membranes. Flucytosine is converted to 5-fluorouracil inside fungal cells, interfering with protein synthesis by incorporation into fungal RNA. This combination demonstrates synergistic antifungal activity, particularly against Cryptococcus neoformans infections, and has shown superior efficacy compared to single-drug therapy in experimental models of cryptococcal meningitis.
