Overview

Galangin is a natural flavonol—specifically, a 3,5,7-trihydroxyflavone—found in high concentrations in the rhizomes of Alpinia officinarum (lesser galangal), Alpinia galanga, propolis, and some other plants[1][6]. It exhibits a range of biological activities, including anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, antiviral, antibacterial, and anticancer effects demonstrated in preclinical models[6][7][5]. Mechanistic studies show galangin inhibits cell proliferation and induces apoptosis in cancer cells, in part by modulating the JAK2/STAT3/ROS signaling pathway[5]. Additionally, galangin displays antinociceptive (pain-relieving) action mediated by modulation of opioid receptors, vanilloid (TRPV1) receptors, and the glutamatergic system, and it reduces pro-inflammatory cytokines such as IL-1β, TNF-α, and IFN-γ in animal models[3]. Galangin is a small molecule with rapid absorption and elimination profiles when administered orally or intraperitoneally in rodents, but its low bioavailability has prompted investigation into advanced delivery systems such as liposomes, micelles, nanostructured lipid carriers, and β-cyclodextrin complexes for enhanced therapeutic efficacy[1]. It is not an approved pharmaceutical and is primarily researched as a bioactive dietary flavonoid.
