Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Hydrocortisone + hydroxytyrosol is a combination drug formulated primarily for topical use in the treatment of atopic dermatitis and other inflammatory skin conditions. Hydrocortisone is a mild-potency glucocorticoid that acts as an anti-inflammatory agent by modulating immune responses and reducing inflammation. Hydroxytyrosol is a polyphenolic compound derived from olive oil, known for its potent antioxidant and antimicrobial properties, as well as its ability to scavenge free radicals and reduce oxidative stress at sites of inflammation. The combination has been developed using nanoparticle-based delivery systems (notably chitosan nanoparticles) to enhance skin absorption, minimize local and systemic side effects associated with glucocorticoids, improve therapeutic efficacy against atopic dermatitis, and increase patient compliance. Preclinical studies demonstrate that this nanoencapsulated formulation reduces pathological severity of dermatitis lesions, modulates immune biomarkers (including IgE, histamine, prostaglandin E2), suppresses pro-inflammatory cytokines (TH1/TH2), and improves histological features in animal models[1][2][4][5].
