Overview

Hydroxychloroquine + methylprednisolone is a combination of two pharmaceutical agents, each with distinct mechanisms of action. Hydroxychloroquine is an antimalarial and disease-modifying anti-rheumatic drug (DMARD) that modulates immune system activity and inhibits the growth of malaria parasites. It is commonly used for malaria prophylaxis and treatment, as well as autoimmune diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis and lupus erythematosus[1][6][7][8]. Methylprednisolone is a synthetic glucocorticoid corticosteroid with potent anti-inflammatory and immunosuppressive properties, indicated for a wide range of inflammatory, allergic, autoimmune, and hematologic conditions[5]. The combination has been studied in severe COVID-19 pneumonia to assess potential synergistic effects on inflammation control; however, evidence remains limited to observational studies[3]. Both drugs are small molecules administered orally or parenterally depending on indication.
