Interferon alfa-n3 is a purified, human leukocyte-derived type I interferon used as an immunomodulatory and antiviral agent. It is primarily indicated for the intralesional treatment of refractory or recurring external genital warts (condylomata acuminata) in adults[1][2][3][4][5]. The drug works by binding to type I interferon receptor (IFNAR1 and IFNAR2), activating the JAK-STAT signaling pathway, which leads to increased expression of MHC class I proteins and other antiviral mediators. This enhances immune recognition and destruction of virus-infected cells by cytotoxic T lymphocytes[2]. Interferons also induce synthesis of key antiviral proteins such as 2'-5' oligoadenylate synthetase, beta-2 microglobulin, neopterin, and protein kinase R[2]. Interferon alfa-n3 is typically used after failure of other therapies for genital warts.
