Overview
Iodized oil (Lipiodol) labeled with fluorine-18 is a diagnostic radiopharmaceutical agent developed for the imaging and monitoring of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). This formulation consists of a superstable homogeneous mixture of iodinated oil, which acts as a contrast agent and embolic carrier, labeled with the positron-emitting isotope fluorine-18 (18F). Administered via transarterial chemoembolization (TACE), the iodized oil selectively accumulates and is retained within the hypervascular microenvironment of HCC tumors. The addition of fluorine-18 enables high-sensitivity PET/CT imaging, allowing clinicians to visualize the distribution of the embolic agent, assist in tumor staging, and monitor treatment response in real-time or post-procedure.
