Iodized oil (lipiodol) + iodine-131 is a therapeutic radiopharmaceutical combination used for the treatment and imaging of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). It consists of ethiodized oil, which acts as a radio-opaque contrast agent and a selective carrier, labeled with the radioactive isotope iodine-131. When administered via transarterial chemoembolization (TACE), the mixture selectively accumulates in the hypervascular tumor vessels of the liver. The iodine-131 component emits beta particles that provide localized internal radiation therapy to the tumor cells, while its gamma emission allows for scintigraphic imaging and dosimetry. Recent developments include superstable homogeneous mixtures designed to improve the stability and delivery of the nuclide within the oil for enhanced diagnostic and therapeutic efficacy.
