KD-414

KD-414 is an inactivated whole-virus vaccine developed by KM Biologics, a member of the Meiji Group, in collaboration with Meiji Seika Pharma for the prevention of COVID-19. The vaccine is composed of purified, inactivated SARS-CoV-2 virions and is adjuvanted with aluminum hydroxide to enhance the immune response. Unlike mRNA or subunit vaccines that target only the spike protein, KD-414 presents the entire virion to the immune system, potentially eliciting a broader range of antibodies and cellular responses against multiple viral proteins. The vaccine has been evaluated in Phase 2/3 clinical trials in Japan for both adult and pediatric populations (including children as young as 6 months). Development has included updates to the target strain to address emerging variants, transitioning from the ancestral strain to Omicron subvariants such as XBB.1.5 and JN.1.
