L-arginine + N-nitro-L-arginine is an experimental combination of two amino acid derivatives with opposing effects on nitric oxide (NO) synthesis. L‑arginine is a semi-essential amino acid and the natural substrate for nitric oxide synthase (NOS), leading to the production of NO, a key signaling molecule involved in vasodilation, immune response, and neurotransmission[7][10]. N‑nitro‑L‑arginine (also known as L-NNA or NOARG) is a synthetic derivative of arginine that acts as a competitive inhibitor of NOS, thereby reducing endogenous NO production[2][3][5][6]. This combination has been used in research settings to study the physiological roles of NO by modulating its levels—L‑arginine increases while N‑nitro‑L‑arginine decreases NO synthesis. There are no approved therapeutic indications for this specific combination; it is primarily used as a pharmacological tool in preclinical studies.
