The MDCK cell-based influenza virus split vaccine is an inactivated influenza vaccine produced using Madin-Darby Canine Kidney (MDCK) cell culture technology as a substrate for virus propagation, rather than traditional embryonated chicken eggs. This manufacturing approach avoids egg-adaptation mutations that can reduce vaccine effectiveness and provides a suitable alternative for individuals with egg allergies. The vaccine is a 'split' virion product, meaning the virus particles are inactivated and then chemically disrupted (split) with detergents to reduce reactogenicity while maintaining immunogenicity. Developed by the Shandong Provincial Center for Disease Control and Prevention, the vaccine is being evaluated in bivalent, trivalent, and quadrivalent formulations for the prevention of seasonal influenza in individuals aged 3 years and older.
