Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Melgain (also known as Novoskin) is a first-in-class peptide-based topical lotion developed by Issar Pharmaceuticals for the treatment of vitiligo. The active ingredient is a synthetic decapeptide derived from basic Fibroblast Growth Factor (bFGF). It works by modulating bFGF and inflammatory pathways to stimulate the migration and proliferation of melanocytes, thereby promoting skin repigmentation and repair. Originally launched in India in 2004, Melgain was later licensed to Dr. Reddy's Laboratories for marketing in the domestic market. Clinical studies have demonstrated that Melgain leads to significant re-pigmentation in 80-90% of patients, outperforming standard treatments such as corticosteroids and phototherapy. The drug is noted for its safety profile, making it suitable for use in children and effective across various body areas affected by the condition.
