This is a combination therapy consisting of methylprednisolone, a synthetic glucocorticoid corticosteroid, and recombinant human granulocyte colony-stimulating factor (rhG-CSF), a biologic cytokine. Methylprednisolone acts primarily as an anti-inflammatory and immunosuppressive agent by binding to the glucocorticoid receptor and modulating gene expression to suppress immune responses. Recombinant human G-CSF stimulates the proliferation, differentiation, and activation of neutrophil precursors in the bone marrow by binding to the G-CSF receptor on hematopoietic cells. The combination has been studied for synergistic effects in promoting functional recovery after spinal cord injury[1], improving steroid responsiveness in severe alcoholic hepatitis[3][10], enhancing hematopoietic recovery after chemotherapy-induced neutropenia[8], and inducing differentiation/apoptosis of leukemic cells[6]. The two agents are typically administered together for their complementary mechanisms—methylprednisolone reduces inflammation while rhG-CSF promotes myeloid cell regeneration.
