Overview

Modified Wumei pill + mesalazine is a combination therapy consisting of a traditional Chinese herbal formulation (Modified Wumei pill) and the anti-inflammatory drug mesalazine. Modified Wumei pill is based on the classical Wumei Pill (WMP), which contains multiple herbs such as Mume Fructus, Asari Radix Et Rhizoma, Cinnamomi Ramulus, Coptidis Rhizoma, Angelicae Sinensis Radix, Panax Ginseng, Zanthoxyli Pericarpium, Zingiberis Rhizoma, and Aconiti Lateralis Radix Praeparata. The formula may be further adjusted ("modified") to target specific clinical presentations. Mesalazine (5-aminosalicylic acid) is a well-established small molecule anti-inflammatory agent used primarily for mild-to-moderate ulcerative colitis. The combination has been studied in China for the treatment of ulcerative colitis and related gastrointestinal disorders. Clinical studies suggest that adding Modified Wumei pill to standard mesalazine therapy can improve clinical response rates and endoscopic findings compared to mesalazine alone[2]. Mechanistically, Modified Wumei pill exerts effects through anti-inflammation (notably via inhibition of TLR4-NF-κB signaling), antioxidation pathways (reducing oxidative stress), modulation of immune responses (including regulation of cytokines like IL-6 and TNF), and possibly by influencing gut barrier integrity[1][5][9]. Mesalazine acts locally in the colon to inhibit cyclooxygenase and lipoxygenase pathways involved in prostaglandin production. This combination represents an integrative approach leveraging both conventional pharmaceutical intervention with evidence-based traditional herbal medicine.
