Overview
Peginterferon lambda‑1a is a long‑acting, pegylated type III interferon (also known as interferon λ or interleukin‑29) developed for antiviral therapy. It acts as an agonist of the interleukin 29 receptor, stimulating antiviral responses primarily in hepatocytes and epithelial cells due to its restricted receptor distribution. This selectivity is associated with fewer systemic side effects compared to type I interferons such as alfa interferons. Peginterferon lambda‑1a was originally developed at ZymoGenetics and has been investigated for hepatitis C virus (HCV), hepatitis D virus (HDV), and COVID‑19 infections, reaching phase III trials in HCV and HDV. Development for hepatitis B, hepatitis C, and cancer has been discontinued[2][3][4][5][6].
