Phyllodulcin is a natural dihydroisocoumarin compound extracted from the leaves of Hydrangea macrophylla var. thunbergii and Hydrangea serrata. It is primarily known as a high-intensity natural sweetener, being 400-800 times sweeter than sucrose. Pharmacologically, it acts as a non-selective phosphodiesterase (PDE) inhibitor. Research has demonstrated its potential in treating obesity by regulating adipogenesis and lipogenesis-related genes, and in diabetes by improving glucose homeostasis. It also exhibits anti-allergic properties through lymphocyte suppression and neuroprotective effects in Alzheimer's disease models by inhibiting amyloid-beta aggregation and reducing neuroinflammation. While it is a subject of significant pharmacological research, it is not currently developed as a commercial pharmaceutical drug by any specific company.
