Overview

Pinosylvin is a natural stilbenoid polyphenol, specifically a trans-stilbene derivative, primarily found in the heartwood of pine trees such as *Pinus sylvestris* and in certain other woody plants[1][2][4][6][9]. It serves as a pre-infectious toxin and phytoalexin in plants, providing defense against pathogens and insects. Pharmacologically, pinosylvin has been shown to exert **anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, antifungal, antibacterial, anticancer, neuroprotective, and anti-allergic** effects[1][3][5][7]. Mechanistically, it modulates multiple signaling pathways, including inhibition of prostaglandin E2 (PGE2) via COX-2 suppression, inhibition of iNOS and NO production, modulation of the PI3K/Akt and JAK/STAT pathways, and upregulation of heme oxygenase-1 (HO-1) expression involved in cellular antioxidant defense[1][3]. It also affects cell cycle progression, apoptosis (through caspase-3 activation), autophagy (via AMPK activation), and inflammation (through downregulation of pro-inflammatory cytokines such as IL-6 and MCP1)[1][3][7].
