Drug intelligence / Profile preview
This pre-pandemic avian influenza A (H7N9) vaccine is a clinical-stage candidate developed by Vaxxas using its proprietary high-density microarray patch (HD-MAP) technology. The HD-MAP platform utilizes thousands of vaccine-coated microscopic projections to deliver antigens directly to the abundant immune cells located just below the skin surface (epidermis and upper dermis). This transdermal delivery method is designed to be needle-free and potentially offers enhanced immunogenicity, dose-sparing effects, and improved thermostability compared to traditional needle-and-syringe injections. The vaccine specifically targets the H7N9 strain, identified by the WHO as a significant pandemic threat due to its high fatality rate. The development is supported by the Biomedical Advanced Research and Development Authority (BARDA) and is currently undergoing Phase 1 clinical evaluation to assess safety and immunogenicity in both adjuvanted and non-adjuvanted formulations.
