Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Purple corn extract is a standardized botanical preparation derived from the kernels, cobs, or husks of *Zea mays L.* (purple corn), notable for its exceptionally high content of anthocyanins—primarily cyanidin-3-glucoside—as well as other polyphenols and flavonoids[2][4][5]. The primary mechanism of action is attributed to its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. Purple corn extract has demonstrated a range of biological activities in preclinical and some clinical studies, including anti-obesity, anti-diabetic, antihypertensive, anticancer, neuroprotective effects, and improvement in metabolic health[1][3][4][5]. It has also shown efficacy in models of dry eye disease by reducing inflammation and promoting cytoprotection in ocular tissues[7]. The safety profile appears favorable with no observed toxicity at high doses in animal studies[5][9].
