Overview

Qingdaigao is a traditional Chinese topical herbal ointment primarily used for various inflammatory and infectious skin conditions. The formula typically contains indigo naturalis (Qing Dai), phellodendron bark (Huang Bai), talcum (Hua Shi), gypsum fibrosum (Shi Gao), and a base such as petroleum jelly or beeswax. It is designed to clear heat, resolve fire toxicity, cool the blood, disperse stagnation, reduce swelling, absorb dampness and serous fluid, relieve inflammation and itching. In modern practice it is used externally for eczema (including weeping atopic eczema and nummular eczema), impetigo, herpes rashes/shingles lesions (molluscum contagiosum), urticaria/hives, poison ivy dermatitis as well as tinea corporis/ringworm and other dry fungal skin infections[1][2][3][4][5]. The mechanism of action is based on anti-inflammatory effects from its herbal components; indigo naturalis has demonstrated anti-inflammatory properties in vitro. Qingdaigao does not have FDA approval for any indication; it is marketed as an herbal supplement or over-the-counter topical product.
