Overview
Recombinant herpes zoster vaccine (CHO) is a protein subunit vaccine developed by Anhui Zhifei Longcom Biopharmaceutical for the prevention of herpes zoster (shingles) in adults aged 40 years and older. The vaccine utilizes the Varicella-Zoster Virus (VZV) glycoprotein E (gE) as the antigen, which is expressed in Chinese Hamster Ovary (CHO) cells. It is formulated with an adjuvant system designed to enhance the T-cell mediated immune response, which is critical for controlling the reactivation of latent VZV. The vaccine is administered as a two-dose intramuscular injection series. As of 2023, it is undergoing Phase III clinical evaluation in China (e.g., ChiCTR2300076253) to assess its efficacy and safety compared to placebo.
