Overview

Rituximab (Instituto Vital Brasil) is a biosimilar monoclonal antibody being developed by Instituto Vital Brasil in collaboration with Bionovis. It is designed to be highly similar to the reference product, Rituxan/MabThera. The drug targets the CD20 antigen, a protein primarily expressed on the surface of B-lymphocytes. Its mechanism of action involves the depletion of B cells through several pathways, including antibody-dependent cellular cytotoxicity (ADCC) and complement-dependent cytotoxicity (CDC). This biosimilar is intended for the treatment of B-cell malignancies such as non-Hodgkin lymphoma (NHL) and chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL), as well as various autoimmune disorders. The project is part of a strategic partnership in Brazil to increase local access to high-cost biological medicines.
