Overview

This combination therapy involves the co-administration of rituximab, a chimeric monoclonal antibody, and mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) for the treatment of primary nephrotic syndrome (PNS) in patients with stage 3-4 chronic kidney disease (CKD). Rituximab functions by binding to the CD20 antigen on the surface of B-lymphocytes, leading to their depletion and a subsequent reduction in the immune-mediated inflammatory processes driving nephrotic syndrome. Mesenchymal stem cells are multipotent stromal cells known for their immunomodulatory properties and potential to promote tissue regeneration and repair in the kidneys. This therapeutic approach, investigated by Zhujiang Hospital, aims to delay disease progression and improve renal function in patients who may be resistant to conventional corticosteroid therapy or have progressed to advanced stages of renal impairment.
