Overview

Roseomonas mucosa + cardamom seeds is a topical live biotherapeutic product (LBP) developed for the treatment of atopic dermatitis (AD). The formulation consists of the specific bacterial strain *Roseomonas mucosa* RSM2015, originally isolated and characterized at the NIAID's Laboratory of Clinical Immunology and Microbiology, combined with ground cardamom seeds in a sucrose solution. *R. mucosa* acts by colonizing the skin and producing protective lipids, such as ceramides and sphingolipids, which restore the epithelial barrier and modulate inflammatory responses. The addition of cardamom seeds is intended to provide an anti-pruritic effect to reduce itching. The product is currently being evaluated in Phase 2b clinical trials and is marketed as an over-the-counter topical probiotic under the brand name Defensin.
