RT-106 is a preclinical-stage basal insulin program being developed by Rani Therapeutics for the treatment of diabetes, particularly type 2 diabetes. The drug is a protein biologic (basal insulin) that targets the insulin receptor to provide long-acting glycemic control. RT-106 utilizes the proprietary RaniPill oral delivery platform, a robotic capsule designed to navigate through the stomach to the small intestine. Once in the intestine, the capsule deploys a microneedle to inject the insulin protein directly into the intestinal wall for systemic absorption, bypassing the degradative environment of the gastrointestinal tract. This approach is intended to replace daily subcutaneous injections with an oral pill, potentially improving patient compliance and quality of life.
