S100A9-targeted cowpea mosaic virus is an immunostimulatory plant virus nanoparticle developed for the treatment and prophylaxis of metastatic cancers, specifically breast cancer and melanoma. It utilizes the cowpea mosaic virus (CPMV) as a scaffold, which is naturally recognized by the immune system as a pathogen-associated molecular pattern (PAMP), leading to the recruitment of immune cells such as neutrophils and dendritic cells and the polarization of macrophages toward an anti-tumor M1 phenotype. By targeting the S100A9 protein—a biomarker upregulated in the pre-metastatic and established tumor microenvironment—the nanoparticle can be administered systemically to home to metastatic sites, such as the lungs. This approach aims to overcome the limitations of native CPMV, which typically requires intratumoral injection to be effective, by enabling targeted delivery to disseminated disease sites.
