Overview

STEEN Solution is a buffered, physiological extracellular electrolyte solution specifically developed by XVIVO Perfusion for use in ex vivo lung perfusion (EVLP). It contains human serum albumin (HSA) to provide optimal colloid osmotic pressure, which prevents pulmonary edema during perfusion, and dextran 40, which coats the vascular endothelium to protect against leukocyte adhesion and improve microcirculation. The solution is designed to facilitate the flushing, preservation, and normothermic assessment of donor lungs that initially fail to meet standard transplantation criteria. By providing a stable environment for evaluation and potential rehabilitation, STEEN Solution allows transplant teams to increase the pool of viable donor organs. It is typically used in conjunction with the XVIVO Perfusion System (XPS) and may be supplemented with antibiotics, heparin, and corticosteroids during the procedure.
