Overview

Yun-Pi-Yi-Shen-Tong-Du-Tang is an empirical Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) formula created by Prof. Chengping Wen, following the academic theory of "invigorating spleen and kidney, dredging collaterals" advanced by Zhu Liang Chun[2][3]. It is intended as a complementary treatment for ankylosing spondylitis (AS) and consists of 11 medicinal herbs, grouped according to TCM principles into "monarch" and "assistant" components. Major herbs include Atractylodes Lancea, Radix Astragali, Glycyrrhiza (to strengthen the spleen), Achyranthes Bidentata (to strengthen kidneys), Rhizoma Smilacis Glabrae, and Aconitum Carmichaeli (to dredge governor vessel). Network pharmacology and protein interaction analyses suggest the mechanism involves modulation of the TLR (Toll-like receptor) signaling pathway and T cell receptor signaling pathway, with key molecular targets identified such as JAK2, STAT3, HSP90AA1, TNF, and PTEN[2][3]. The formula contains over 350 active ingredients and has demonstrated efficacy and favorable safety for AS in retrospective clinical studies[2][3]. The developer is Prof. Chengping Wen, with formulation adjustments over more than two decades for clinical stability and minimized side effects.
