Overview

Zuogui Yin is a classic traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) formula originally recorded in the "Jingyue Quanshu" (Complete Works of Jingyue) by Zhang Jingyue. It is primarily used to nourish Kidney Yin and replenish essence. The formula typically consists of six herbs: *Rehmannia glutinosa* (Shu Di Huang), *Dioscorea opposita* (Shan Yao), *Cornus officinalis* (Shan Zhu Yu), *Lycium barbarum* (Gou Qi Zi), *Poria cocos* (Fu Ling), and *Glycyrrhiza uralensis* (Gan Cao). In modern clinical practice, it is frequently investigated for its efficacy in treating perimenopausal syndrome, particularly when characterized by kidney deficiency. It is often used in combination with other formulas, such as Chaihu Sugan San, to address complex patterns involving both liver depression and kidney deficiency. Clinical studies, including Phase 0 trials, have evaluated its safety and efficacy in modulating hormonal balance and alleviating menopausal symptoms.
