Overview

The cytokine network and immune cells via paracrine signaling refers to the complex system of intercellular communication where immune cells secrete signaling proteins, known as cytokines, to influence the behavior of adjacent cells (StatPearls, 2023). In healthy states, this network maintains homeostasis; however, dysregulation of these signaling pathways is a hallmark of various pathologies, including chronic inflammatory diseases, autoimmune disorders, and the tumor microenvironment (PubMed, 2021). Therapeutic strategies often focus on specific nodes within this network, such as individual cytokines (e.g., TNF-alpha, IL-6) or their receptors, to dampen overactive immune responses or stimulate anti-tumor activity (NIH, 2022). Because this term describes a broad biological process rather than a single molecular entity, it is not classified as a discrete therapeutic target in the traditional sense.
