Overview

Inflammatory cytokines and immune system receptors encompass a vast array of proteins that mediate communication between cells of the immune system and other tissues (StatPearls, 2023). These include soluble signaling proteins like interleukins, interferons, and tumor necrosis factors, along with their specific transmembrane receptors (UniProt, 2024). In a healthy state, these molecules regulate the intensity and duration of immune responses to pathogens and cellular stress. However, overproduction or persistent signaling is a hallmark of many chronic inflammatory and autoimmune diseases, such as rheumatoid arthritis, psoriasis, and Crohn's disease (PubMed, 2022). Therapeutic strategies targeting this system include biologics that sequester cytokines or block receptor binding, as well as small molecules that inhibit intracellular signaling pathways like the JAK-STAT pathway (Nature Reviews Drug Discovery, 2021). While highly effective, modulating these targets often carries risks of immunosuppression and increased susceptibility to opportunistic infections (FDA, 2023).
