An inflammatory state is a complex physiological condition characterized by the activation of the immune system in response to harmful stimuli, such as pathogens, damaged cells, or toxic compounds. In clinical pharmacology, the 'inflammatory state' is a phenotypic outcome rather than a specific molecular target; therapeutic interventions aim to resolve this state by targeting specific proteins like TNF-alpha or Janus kinases to mitigate inflammation and prevent long-term damage (Nature Reviews Drug Discovery, 2017).
Drugs do not target the 'inflammatory state' as a single molecule; instead, they modulate it by inhibiting specific molecular components such as pro-inflammatory cytokines (TNF-alpha, IL-6), enzymes (COX-1, COX-2), or signaling kinases (JAK1/2/3).
