Innate and adaptive immune response pathways

Overview

The innate and adaptive immune response pathways represent the complex, integrated system of biological processes that protect an organism against disease (NIH, 2023). The innate system provides the first line of defense through non-specific mechanisms like phagocytosis, the complement system, and physical barriers (Janeway et al., 2001). In contrast, the adaptive system offers highly specific recognition of pathogens and long-term immunological memory via T and B lymphocytes (PubMed, 2022). Dysregulation of these pathways is central to a wide array of pathologies, including autoimmune disorders, chronic inflammatory diseases, and the evasion of immune surveillance by cancer cells (Nature Reviews Immunology, 2021). Therapeutic intervention typically involves modulating specific molecular components within these pathways, such as cytokines, cell surface receptors, or intracellular signaling enzymes (StatPearls, 2023). Because these pathways are so broad, drugs targeting them can range from broad-spectrum immunosuppressants to highly targeted monoclonal antibodies and cell therapies (NIH, 2023).
