Melatonin Receptor Type 1B (MT2)

Target
MT2
Molecular classification
G-protein coupled receptor, GPCR, Class A GPCR, Receptor
01

Overview

MT2, also known as Melatonin receptor type 1B or MTNR1B, is one of two high-affinity G protein-coupled receptors (GPCRs) for melatonin. It plays a central role in phase-shifting the internal circadian clock, selectively increases non–rapid eye movement (NREM) sleep, influences light-dependent retinal functions, and regulates bone metabolism. Dysfunction or altered expression/activity of MT2 has been linked with sleep disorders, circadian rhythm abnormalities, mood disorders, pain modulation, and type 2 diabetes pathogenesis.
