Overview

Mitochondrial Amidoxime Reducing Component 1 (MTARC1), also known as MARC1 or MOSC1, is a mammalian molybdenum-containing enzyme located in the outer mitochondrial membrane. It plays a key role in the reduction of N-oxygenated molecules, particularly amidoximes, to their corresponding amidines. This activity is important for both endogenous metabolism and drug activation. Genetic variation in MTARC1 can lower blood cholesterol levels and protect from cirrhosis by modulating lipid metabolism pathways. As a component of prodrug-converting systems, MTARC1 reduces many N-hydroxylated drugs—especially amidoximes—increasing their bioavailability.
