Th2 Cytokine Suppression

Molecular classification
Cytokine Signaling Pathway, Immunomodulatory Pathway
01

Overview

Th2 cytokine suppression refers to the inhibition or downregulation of cytokines produced by T helper 2 (Th2) cells, primarily interleukin-4 (IL-4), interleukin-5 (IL-5), and interleukin-13 (IL-13). These cytokines are central to humoral immunity, allergic responses, and defense against helminthic infections. Suppressing Th2 cytokines is a therapeutic strategy in diseases where excessive Th2 activity leads to pathology, such as allergies, asthma, certain cancers like cutaneous T-cell lymphoma (CTCL), and some autoimmune conditions. Mechanisms include transcriptional regulation (e.g., T-bet overexpression), cytokine neutralization (e.g., anti-IL-4 or anti-IL-13 antibodies), modulation of dendritic cell function, and allergen-specific immunotherapy.
