Overview
A combination of two vaccines administered simultaneously at birth in many low-income countries as recommended by the World Health Organization (WHO). The BCG vaccine protects against tuberculosis (TB), especially in infants and young children whose immune systems are more vulnerable to this disease. It works by strengthening the child's immune system to fight TB-causing germs, effectively preventing the development of TB disease by inducing potent Th1 responses to mycobacterial antigen in newborns. OPV is administered orally and protects against poliomyelitis by stimulating the production of antibodies, providing long-lasting protection against the polio virus. Research has shown that administering OPV simultaneously with BCG at birth may affect, specifically down-regulate, the immune response to BCG vaccine.
