This is a combination of three agents: a carbapenem antibiotic, piperacillin (an extended-spectrum penicillin), and tazobactam (a β-lactamase inhibitor). Carbapenems are broad-spectrum β-lactam antibiotics that inhibit bacterial cell wall synthesis by binding to penicillin-binding proteins. Piperacillin also inhibits bacterial cell wall synthesis, while tazobactam protects piperacillin from degradation by β-lactamase enzymes produced by certain bacteria. This combination is not a standard or approved pharmaceutical product but may be referenced in research or clinical practice as an experimental or synergistic regimen for treating multidrug-resistant Gram-negative infections, particularly those caused by organisms producing serine carbapenemases such as KPC and OXA-48[5]. The rationale for combining these agents is to enhance antibacterial activity against resistant pathogens through multiple mechanisms of action.
