Overview

Ceftazidime + avibactam + meropenem is a triple antibiotic combination therapy used against difficult-to-treat infections, particularly those caused by carbapenem-resistant Enterobacterales (CRE). This combination leverages the synergistic effects between ceftazidime-avibactam and meropenem. Ceftazidime is a third-generation cephalosporin, avibactam is a non-β-lactam β-lactamase inhibitor that restores ceftazidime activity against certain resistant bacteria, and meropenem is a carbapenem antibiotic. The combination has shown significant synergistic activity against KPC-producing Klebsiella pneumoniae and can prevent the emergence of resistance mutations to ceftazidime-avibactam. Studies have demonstrated that this combination can restore susceptibility to both partnering antibiotics, making it a viable therapeutic alternative for serious infections due to KPC-producing K. pneumoniae with high-level resistance to carbapenems.
