Overview

This is a combination chemotherapy regimen consisting of five drugs: cyclophosphamide (an alkylating agent), doxorubicin (an anthracycline antibiotic), etoposide (a topoisomerase II inhibitor), prednisone (a synthetic glucocorticoid corticosteroid), and vincristine (a vinca alkaloid). The regimen is commonly referred to as CHOPE or CHOEP. It is used primarily in the treatment of advanced-stage Hodgkin lymphoma, non-Hodgkin lymphoma—including aggressive subtypes—and other hematologic malignancies. Each component acts via a distinct mechanism to inhibit cancer cell proliferation and survival: - Cyclophosphamide cross-links DNA strands, leading to apoptosis. - Doxorubicin intercalates into DNA and inhibits topoisomerase II. - Etoposide also inhibits topoisomerase II, causing DNA strand breaks. - Vincristine disrupts microtubule formation during mitosis. - Prednisone induces apoptosis in certain cancer cells through its glucocorticoid activity. The combination aims to maximize antitumor efficacy by targeting multiple pathways involved in cell division and survival[1][4][5].
