Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Dexamethasone + tocilizumab is a combination therapy that pairs a synthetic glucocorticoid (dexamethasone) with a humanized monoclonal antibody IL-6 receptor inhibitor (tocilizumab). This combination has shown significant efficacy in treating severe COVID-19 by providing complementary anti-inflammatory effects. Dexamethasone offers broad anti-inflammatory properties while tocilizumab specifically blocks IL-6 signaling, which is implicated in the cytokine storm associated with severe COVID-19. Clinical trials have demonstrated that this combination reduces mortality, shortens hospital and ICU stays, decreases oxygen requirements, and improves clinical recovery compared to dexamethasone alone.
