Overview

Guardmet is a fixed-dose combination (FDC) pharmaceutical product developed by JW Pharmaceutical for the management of type 2 diabetes mellitus. It combines two antihyperglycemic agents with complementary mechanisms of action: anagliptin and metformin. Anagliptin is a selective dipeptidyl peptidase-4 (DPP-4) inhibitor that increases the levels of active incretin hormones, such as glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1), thereby stimulating insulin secretion and suppressing glucagon release in a glucose-dependent manner. Metformin is a biguanide that primarily reduces hepatic glucose production, decreases intestinal glucose absorption, and improves insulin sensitivity by increasing peripheral glucose uptake. Guardmet was approved in South Korea in 2016 as a treatment option for patients whose blood sugar levels are not adequately controlled by monotherapy.
