Overview

A combination therapy consisting of mesalamine (5-aminosalicylic acid) and omega-3 fatty acids used primarily for the treatment of inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD). Mesalamine works through anti-inflammatory mechanisms[1]. Omega-3 fatty acids (primarily EPA and DHA) compete with arachidonic acid for the utilization of the 5-lipoxygenase enzyme cascade, inhibiting the production of inflammatory mediators like LTB4. This combination has been studied for maintaining remission in Crohn's disease and treating active ulcerative colitis.
