nano-EGCG is a nanoparticle formulation of the green tea polyphenol (-)-epigallocatechin-3-gallate (EGCG) encapsulated in a chitosan polymer. Developed to overcome the poor oral bioavailability and rapid metabolism of free EGCG, this "nanochemoprevention" approach utilizes the naturally occurring polymer chitosan to provide sustained release and enhanced stability. In preclinical models of human melanoma, nano-EGCG has demonstrated significantly higher potency than non-encapsulated EGCG, inducing apoptosis through the modulation of the Bax/Bcl-2 ratio, activation of caspases, and induction of cyclin-dependent kinase inhibitors p21 and p27. It has shown efficacy in inhibiting tumor growth in mouse xenograft models at doses ten-fold lower than free EGCG.
