Overview

Nystatin + silver sulfadiazine is a topical antimicrobial combination used primarily for the prevention and treatment of burn wound infections. This combination provides broad-spectrum coverage against both bacterial and fungal pathogens. Silver sulfadiazine is an antibacterial agent from the sulfonamide group that is effective against many gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria, while nystatin is an antifungal agent effective against Candida species. In vitro studies have shown that when combined in a 1:1 ratio, both agents maintain their antimicrobial properties without antagonism, unlike some other combinations (such as nystatin with Sulfamylon). This combination has been used successfully in clinical settings to control both local and systemic Candida and bacterial burn wound sepsis.
