Qingchang Wenzhong decoction (QCWZD) is a traditional Chinese medicine prescription composed of several herbs, including Coptis, Cannon ginger, Sophora, Indigo naturalis, Sanguisorba carbon, Aucklandia, Pseudo-Ginseng, and Licorice. Its major active ingredients include berberine hydrochloride, gallic acid, ginsenoside Rg1, ginsenoside Rb1, and liquiritin. Mesalazine is a conventional Western medicine for treating ulcerative colitis (UC). The combination of QCWZD and mesalazine represents an integrated traditional Chinese and Western medicine approach to treating inflammatory bowel diseases, particularly UC. This combination therapy has been shown to accelerate recovery from DSS-induced epithelial injury, reduce mucosal inflammation, attenuate intestinal dysbiosis, enhance tryptophan metabolism, accelerate intestinal stem cells-mediated epithelial regeneration, and protect the integrity of intestinal mucosa through activation of Wnt/β-catenin signals. Clinical studies have shown significant efficacy in patients with mild to moderate ulcerative colitis, providing comprehensive treatment by targeting multiple aspects of UC pathophysiology, especially through alleviating inflammation and intestinal fibrosis.
