San'ao Tang

San'ao Tang is a classic Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) formula originating from the *Taiping Huimin Heji Jufang*. It typically consists of three primary herbal ingredients: *Ephedra sinica* (Ma Huang), *Prunus armeniaca* (Xing Ren), and *Glycyrrhiza uralensis* (Gan Cao). Traditionally used to treat respiratory conditions characterized by "external wind-cold" and "lung qi obstruction," such as the common cold, cough, and asthma, it is currently being evaluated in clinical trials for refractory chronic cough. The formula is often administered as granules or a decoction and is sometimes combined with other TCM formulations like Qingjin Huatan Tang to address complex syndromes involving both cold and heat. Its pharmacological effects include bronchodilation, anti-inflammatory activity, and regulation of airway hyperresponsiveness.
